// about the lab

We help people understand and use playfulness, not as silliness or fun for its own sake, but as our natural adaptive system.

The Playfulness Lab provides research, education, and tools that help people understand and embrace playfulness as the thing that lets us think clearly, adapt, and thrive under pressure, uncertainty, and setback. Not a mood. A resource.

Chris Marshall

Behavioural scientist · psychotherapist in training (UKCP) · founder

Chris is a behavioural scientist currently completing a PhD in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Northampton, and training as a psychotherapist with UKCP. Before this, he spent twenty years in finance, working as both a wealth manager and an investment strategist, experience that shapes how he thinks about risk, uncertainty, and how people actually behave under pressure, not just how theory says they should.

He is the author of two books. Decoding Change (2022) looks at why the world feels more uncertain, chaotic, and fast paced than ever before, using a behavioural science lens to help readers see and understand change more clearly: the short version is that we're living through unprecedented change driven by multiple megatrends, all in motion, all intertwined. The Playful Advantage (2025) looks at how successful organisations and teams harness playfulness, usually without realising it, to build resilient, innovative cultures where people thrive.
